The Spirit of (Space) Flight
I saw a picture in an aviation magazine that I liked. I thought, "I could create a mosaic much like that in colored glass tiles". It took me about two months of cutting and gluing to build "The Spirit of Flight," which was horizontal and it hung above my couch in our family room. I enjoyed looking at it every day. I learned that owning a piece of art one cares about, that means something to them, never grows old, never wears out, and brings joy and happiness and satisfaction every day.
Several years later, after I had gone through the astronaut selection process for my second time Deke Slayton called. He said they wanted me to come down to Houston and help them find a way to go to the moon and back. Of course, I said "yes", and as I walked back to tell my family, my mosaic caught my eye. I took it off the wall, turned it vertically, and retitled it "The Spirit of Space Flight". It is on the wall of my studio today.
